Selected UML Specification Excerpts

These UML Specification excerpts are organized by the three fundamental concepts of the Building Requirements Consensus Methodology – use case, system and role. The source of each excerpt is documented. Except as noted, they are from various versions of the specification.

Ivar Jacobson is the father of use cases. There are several quotes from his original book, Object-Oriented Software Engineering, in which he originally described use cases.

Once, to help define the term system, I used a different source because neither the UML definitions or Jacobson's book sufficed.

[My comments on the excerpts are enclosed in square brackets in a dark blue font like this sentence.]

I added italics throughout the excerpts to call attention to specific text. I did not notate each time this occurred. This is a global acknowledgment of italicizing in the UML quotes.
